Your old phone could save a life

King IT have partnered with DV Safe Phone to help victims of domestic violence have access to a mobile phone. We know from our first-hand experience with our customers that the mobile phone is often one of the first items to be thrown, broken or stolen during domestic violence, leaving the victim cut off from the outside world, with no way to call emergency services or helplines for assistance.

According to a recent Google statement, online searches regarding domestic violence in New South Wales have increased by 75 per cent since the first recorded COVID-19 cases in the state, demonstrating that many victims are finding themselves in a more vulnerable position confined to their homes with their abuser.

In order to reach out to these victims in a practical and innovative way, King IT have partnered with DV Safe Phone to develop a pilot project that collects unwanted mobile phones and delivers them to those in need.

Our campaign is aimed at collecting working phones, testing the phones for functionality, ensuring that all user data has been erased, and redistributing working mobile phones to victims of domestic violence, through registered not-for-profit charities who have existing relationships with domestic violence agencies, safe houses, crisis centres, and volunteers Australia-wide. It was recently reported that there has been a 75% increase in Google Searches for “Domestic Violence” since Covid-19 first hit our shores so this is something we would love your support to address. We are seeking donations of old (working) mobile phones, and phone chargers from individuals and companies.

Our program helps in the following ways:

  1. It provides a “safe phone” to victims of domestic violence, to call for help in an emergency.
  2. It provides a Corporate Social Responsibility program like no other, with DV Safe Phone doing all the heavy lifting (all people need to do is drop into King IT with a working phone and we will do the rest)
  3. We can handle the security requirements around the disposal of old mobile devices. (We individually factory reset and test every phone and remove and destroy any removable SD cards that are still in the phones we receive.)
  4. We meet the environmental requirements around the disposal of old mobile devices (If we can’t use the phone due to age/damage, we will ensure it’s recycled through an official mobile phone recycling centre)

Phones can be dropped into any King IT store. To find out more about the project ‘DV Safe Phone’ please visit https://www.dvsafephone.org
