Locked Out of myGov? How to Set It Up Properly | King IT

01st June 2026

A Medicare claim to submit. A Centrelink payment to check. A tax return to lodge. And suddenly you can't get in — because the phone number linked to your account is an old one, or the recovery email is one you've forgotten the password to, or the verification code is going to a phone you no longer have.

It's one of the most frustrating tech situations we help people with at King IT. And almost all of it is preventable with a proper setup.

Here's what most people miss — and what doing it properly actually looks like.

Mistake 1: Using a phone number you no longer use

People set up myGov years ago with an old work phone, an old SIM, a number they've since let go. The account is still linked to it. Every time they try to log in from a new device, the verification code goes to a phone they don't have.

Doing it properly: the phone number on your myGov account should be the one you actually use today — and you should know how to update it without locking yourself out in the process.

Mistake 2: A recovery email you can't get into

Usually an old Bigpond, Hotmail or Yahoo address from a decade ago. Forgotten password. Possibly forgotten the account exists. If you ever need to recover myGov access, this is the address it'll try to use.

Doing it properly: the recovery email should be one you log into regularly and know the password to. If yours isn't, fix it before you need it.

Mistake 3: No backup sign-in method

If your only way into myGov is an SMS code to one phone, and that phone is lost, broken or out of battery — you're locked out at the worst possible moment.

Doing it properly: have more than one verification method set up. The myGov Code Generator app, or backup codes saved somewhere safe, are both options.

Mistake 4: Linking services incorrectly — or not at all

myGov is the front door. Medicare, the ATO, Centrelink and others sit behind it. People often have myGov working but their services aren't properly linked, so they still can't access what they need.

Doing it properly: Medicare, the ATO and any other services you actually use should be linked, working, and tested — before you need them in a hurry.

Mistake 5: Treating Digital ID as optional

Digital ID (the new system replacing myGovID) is becoming the standard way to access government services securely. It's worth setting up properly now rather than in a panic later.

The 30-minute version

All of this — myGov, Medicare, Centrelink, Digital ID, recovery options, sensible backup methods — is something we set up regularly as part of our Government App Setup service. It takes about 30 minutes. You walk out knowing it works, knowing you can get back in if something goes wrong, and not having to think about it again for a long time.
